A Diabetic Dietitian’s Grocery List

Article Overview

Raise your hand if you like grocery shopping… anyone? Yes? No? I’m one of those rare people that LOVES roaming the aisles of the grocery store. And even if I forget my list, I usually can do a pretty good job of remembering what I came for.

As a registered dietitian with type 1 diabetes, my love for food has always been two-fold… both personal and professional. I grew up kind of with the upper hand at the grocery store. I’d been trained by my own dietitians and diabetes educators and knew the foods that helped stabilize my blood sugars better than others. And that carried me into adulthood. I entered graduate school to become a dietitian and could carb count blindfolded, with my hands tied behind my back (ok, not really, but you get the idea).

But maybe you’re not like me. Maybe your diabetes diagnosis is new, or maybe food and/or the mere thought of the grocery store stresses you out. Don’t worry, if that’s you… you’re definitely not alone. I hear this from friends and clients all the time. And it’s usually followed by some sort of request to have me grocery shop for them or to tag along with me while I do my own shopping.
