There’s a big difference between a host or hostess asking:

“Can you eat ______, I was thinking about making it when you come over?”

And someone who says:

“Are you sure you should be eating that?”
.

One shows thoughtfulness, care, and consideration for someone. The other shows a lack of sensitivity and outright judgement about what is appropriate for someone else.
.

I love when people check with me to make sure something they’re preparing or serving is ok for me to eat. It shows me they genuinely care about me. But just a slight change in wording can completely shift how someone with diabetes feels... suddenly they feel as if they’re being judged and all those feelings of isolation, awkwardness, and guilt come flooding in. Please choose your words carefully this summer. ❤️ #letusenjoyouricecream

I get it.... we’re human. Most of us try to find things in common with someone when we talk to them (whether friend or stranger), a way to relate to each other.

If you are living with diabetes, you’ve likely heard a comment like the one above many times… Or maybe it’s that someone’s great aunt had her foot amputated because of diabetes 🙄😑 I get why people say it, but at the same time sometimes it just gets to be really discouraging 😔
.
So, next time you meet someone with diabetes or find out someone you’ve known for a while has diabetes… Tell them a story about someone you know who has diabetes and is doing amazing and thriving! 💃🏻 💯 And if you don’t know anyone... ask questions! It’s so much more encouraging. We hear enough diabetes complications and mortality comments/stories from our doctors. Try talking about people living their best life with diabetes instead! ❤️

MYTH: people with diabetes can’t have bread.
TRUTH: yes, of course people with diabetes can eat bread!

There is so much mis-information about this out there and fear based statements that terrify people living with diabetes. It’s simply just not true!
.
Should you go eat a piece of white bread all by itself? Probably not. But, when you combine it with a quality fat, fiber, or protein source, you’re good to go 👍
.
In these examples here, I used a whole grain bread for some added fiber and the toppings offer fat, protein, or fiber which help promote stable post meal/snack blood sugars:

I wish I could say this was a made up interaction, but some form of this convo has happened to me more times than I can count over the years 🤦🏻‍♀️😑

A few takeaways:
1️⃣ Yes, people with all types of diabetes can still eat sugar, and no, eating too much sugar did not give them diabetes.
2️⃣ Diabetes doesn’t care what you look like. All body types can and do develop all types of diabetes.
3️⃣ Most of us are trying our best to manage a disease we have to live with the rest of our lives and hearing about a relative’s amputation isn’t exactly comforting. Next time, try remembering someone you know who has diabetes and is doing awesome!

If only I could have a chat with my 25 year old self to tell her how strong she’d end up becoming, how much she’d accomplish, and everything she’d have to go through in just 10 short years. I sure as heck would have had a lot more confidence in myself back then ❤️ And I’d tell her the thing she was most bitter about (having diabetes) would quickly turn into the biggest source of joy and confidence in just a short amount of time ❤️

Thankful for all the opportunities and trials that have built my confidence over the years and thankful to be raising two little girls who get to see that in me everyday!
